The new 279,000 sf. Acute Care Pavilion was completed in October 2010. Aesthetics, Inc. provided full interior design, art and wayfinding services for this addition. The project included (16) new OR suites, new NICU, HemOnc Unit, (146) new patient rooms at a total building cost of $260 million. The building is one of California’s first LEED certified acute care hospitals. The architects for this project was Anshen + Allen Architects, a San Francisco based company.

A theme of “Sea to Space” takes visitors on a journey as they ascend the four-story building. Graphics, color, furniture and art were used to enliven both patient and clinical spaces. Rich, but sophisticated color palettes engage children and adults. A theme of textures, repeated in the upholstery, walls and art, elevates the richness of the space and creates a less clinical feeling. The result is a calm and peaceful healing journey with a wealth of intriguing and uplifting details.

“This beautiful new facility doesn’t just bring happiness and comfort to patients, families, and visitors; it brings these same feelings to staff as well. Because it was created so collaboratively, we can each feel a sense that we had a hand in creating a healing environment. The amazement and happiness that we saw in the parents’ faces when their children were moved into their rooms in the new building was incredible and reinforced our perception that a healing superb environment was created.” — Tim Jacoby, Vice President of Facilities, Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center, San Diego, CA
