Color, Light and Sound on a Bridgeway to Healing for Children
The arts theme at the Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota (CHCMN) is “The experience of art is healing.” Experiencing the Sky Bridge is cause for celebration, smiling, and even dancing—a healing environment indeed.
The arts enhance healing on every floor of the Minneapolis campus. Original works, in a variety of media engage visitors and staff, and participation in art-making or participation is encouraged. There’s storytelling on the first floor, painting and drawing on the second, and children and families can make music, dance, try their hand at sculpture and craft projects at places throughout the facility.
Part of the new hospital construction is a 97-foot-long and 9-feet-high two-sided glass sky bridge, with views of Chicago Avenue on either side. Aesthetics, Inc. put out a call for artists who could produce a work that affirms the CHCMN arts theme and draw on color, light and sound to create an interactive experience. Creativ Collaborativ designed and installed a multimedia piece that includes large, painted and laminated colored-glass stars and laser-light BEAMZ that play music when triggered by engaging with the beams. Experiencing the color and sound along the sky bridge brings smiles, opportunities for music-making and even a little dancing to everyone, from the CEO to Children’s Hospital patients, nurses, security guards and staff.
